STEP 1 /
Determine the desired construction bite for the patient.
HELPFUL HINTS :
With adult patients, be careful not to position the mandible too far forward. When this happens arthritically inflamed joints may become more painful.
Younger patients can often tolerate mandibular repositioning further forward.
STEP 2 /
Guide the patient using a wax wafer until they can effectively mold the wafer.
STEP 3 /
Select the appropriate splint for the treatment, and the size if using the Original RCM splint
STEP 4 /
Bring the water to a boil and then unplug the appliance. Soak the dental appliance for a period of 5 to 20 seconds in almost boiling water. During this time instruct the patient to place their head back firmly against the headrest.
HELPFUL HINTS :
The edges of the splint will begin to curl when its ready.
STEP 5 /
Remove the appliance from the hot water with a mouth mirror or other appropriate implement. Hold it carefully in the air to cool until it can be touched, usually 5 to 10 seconds. Inform the patient that the appliance may feel hot when entering their mouth.
HELPFUL HINTS :
The heated material is very pliable. When the material is hot it will stick to itself and other materials. Do not allow the heated appliance to cool on any surface. Use the mouth mirror to handle the heated appliance prior to insertion.
If the appliance material sticks to the edge of the warming vessel, separate it gently. Any blemish to the material can be polished later.
